STAND APART. STAY READY. Practical equipment. Clear reasons.

BACKUP THAT CAN BE MAINTAINED.

Think beyond owning a battery or generator. Safe systems require realistic demand, compatible equipment and a workable way to restore capacity.

Know your essential loads

List the appliances and devices you genuinely need, their verified power requirements, how long they must run, whether start-up demand is higher, and how backup equipment will be charged. Manufacturer-rated battery capacity is not the same as guaranteed useful runtime.

Backup options have different jobs

Portable batteries and power stations

Consider usable output, recharge time, outlet types, protection features, battery care, expected operating conditions and serviceability. Check real device compatibility before promising duration.

Solar and other replenishment

A panel’s rated peak output is not a promise of daily energy. Installation, weather, season, shading, controllers and safe electrical design all affect results. More permanent household systems may require qualified professionals and applicable permissions.

Fuel-powered equipment

Portable generators, stoves and heaters introduce specific safety risks. Never run a fuel-powered generator indoors, in a garage or other partially enclosed space, or by open doors and windows. Never connect one to household wiring without a properly designed and professionally installed arrangement.

Heating and cooking during an outage

Plan insulated clothing and safe heat retention first. Only use cooking and heating equipment in environments expressly permitted by the manufacturer. Outdoor-only stoves and barbecues are not indoor substitutes.

Plan the maintenance loop

Check storage, operating instructions, compatible replacement parts, battery health, fuel management and the ability to recharge or replenish. A system that cannot be safely used or restored after its first cycle may not meet a long-term need.

UK safety reference: HSE — carbon monoxide risks from fuel-burning equipment. Position petrol generators outside in a safely ventilated area away from openings, follow manufacturer instructions and obtain competent advice for electrical connections.
