Car and Work Vehicle Kit Maintenance Checklist
A vehicle kit is only useful when the items still work, are accessible and fit the season. Keep bulky or heavy equipment secured and never let supplies become loose projectiles in the cabin.
Before long journeys
- ☐ Check tyres, lights, wipers, screenwash, fuel/charge and load security.
- ☐ Check weather, road closures, rest stops, breakdown contacts and route alternatives.
- ☐ Check that your phone and in-car charger work.
Monthly check
- ☐ Test torch, headlamp and battery or rechargeable light.
- ☐ Check hi-vis clothing is readily accessible, dry and serviceable.
- ☐ Review water, snacks and medicines according to storage and expiry guidance.
- ☐ Check first-aid supplies, cleanliness and packaging.
- ☐ Confirm phone contact and breakdown cover information has not changed.
When the season changes
- ☐ Add appropriate warm clothing, ice scraper and weather-specific equipment where needed.
- ☐ Check waterproof layers and footwear.
- ☐ Reassess remote-route, night-driving, children and pet needs.
Safety in a breakdown
Follow the Highway Code and emergency instructions. Never place a warning triangle on a motorway. Move to a place of relative safety if possible and seek assistance; roadside repair is not always safe.
